Wheels for August 5
by Mollie Barney

Opportunity School's motto is "Good Beginnings Never End." Executive Director, Dianne Hill, gave us great information about her organization. The mission of Opportunity School is to "help young children, primarily from low-income families, succeed in school and in life." They currently serve 150 children, six weeks old to five years old, who's average income is $22,000 for a family of four. The school prides itself on the low teacher/child ratio, the ever important one-on-one attention and the education that these children receive. Our own Eddie Melin, aka "Grandpa," says that his monthly readings to the children are the "best day of my life every month" and he recommends it to anyone. Thanks to Dianne Hill for a wonderful program!

Doyle Moore and his wife, Doris, were hosts to this weeks Hold-Up guests, Louis and Phyllis Ramondetta, from South Windsor, Conneticut. Despite the rained out play, our guests were treated to a tour of the Panhandle Plains Museum in Canyon and a delicious dinner at Abuelo's. Thanks to Doyle for that report! Only 2 more weeks of Hold-Up remain!

Mollie Barney gave a Diabetic Camp update. She reported that Benjamin Cochran, Rotary's sponsored camper, had a great time at camp and make tons of new friends! Thanks to Xavier Candelaria for your help on Diabetic Camp!

Prayers Answered! Doyle Moore reported that Jess Ghormley continues to improve and might be going home soon!

Shara Hinchey reports that our exchange student, Carlotta Nilius, from Dannenberg, Germany, will be arriving on Friday (Aug. 6), at 6:35 p.m. at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport. Let's give her a great big Rotary Club of Amarillo WELCOME and plan to meet up at the airport around 6:15 p.m. Call Shara for more details.

The Youth Exchange Committee is looking for someone to serve as the Crisis Counselor for Youth Exchange. Someone that the kids can sit down with in the event of a crisis. If you know of someone who fits that description, please contact Jack Campbell, Youth Exchange officer for District 5730, at (432) 262-1337, or (432) 528-1191.

Mary Stephens got her ticket called, but didn't pick the right card. Better luck next time! Paul Borchardt took home the coveted Edes beef jerky and Gina won some Wonderland tickets! I bet I know who this proud Grandma will take to Wonderland!

Many thanks this week go to: President Elect John Early for stepping in for Jake Richards; Doyle Moore, song leader; Dick Marcear (classification "Fire Insurance"), invocation; Melvin Edes, introducing guests and visiting Rotarians; Basil Walker, selling tickets; Dale Bippus and Jeff Neely, greeters.
